The figure is based on Velázquez’s court paintings of young courtiers. Together with Ursa Minor, this figure is inspired by the myth of Callisto and Arcas, transformed into bears and set amongst the stars as these constellations. The bears head is based on similar heads from English salt glaze vessels of the 18th Century.
